Hello there,

Happy spring 2024! I can't believe that this time last April we were starting to prepare for the Diatoms Kickstarter and now this month finds us close to wrapping up production of the game. So much can happen in a year. I know many of you are Diatoms backers already but for those of you that have been following along and haven't ordered the game yet, this is your warning that pre-orders are closing April 30th! There's still time to get the game this fall (and also to pick up the very popular limited-edition wooden tiles.)

As usual you'll find a couple great game recommendations below for your next game night. Also this month- if you’re local to Pittsburgh, don't miss out on two special events:
  • Tomorrow, April 28, 1-4:30pm (& again on May 19): Pittsburgh Playtest, where local game creators showcase their latest creations for public testing.
  • May 15th, 6:30-8:30pm: Open-house at my professional alma mater, Schell Games. If you or your kiddos are interested in a career in video games, this is your chance to get inside a local studio. You can RSVP here.
We are starting to gear up for our next game-publishing adventure: a series of family co-op games! Stay tuned for details starting in Summer 2024. Thanks for being part of our journey.

Still a few days left to pre-order Diatoms!

This beautiful game will only be available this fall to our Kickstarter backers and those that order through us. The window to pre-order closes next week, so if you haven’t grabbed you copy, time is running out! Also available during the pre-order are the limited-edition deluxe wooden tiles, stamped with metallic film on both sides and shipped with a soft velvet bag.
A free monthly-ish event open to the public. The next two events are:
  • Sunday April 28, 2024, 1-4:30pm @ McKenna|Peter|Wright Rooms in the Jared L. Cohon University Center, Carnegie Mellon University
  • Sunday May 19, 2024, 1-4:30pm @ McKenna|Peter|Wright Rooms in the Jared L. Cohon University Center, Carnegie Mellon University

Here are some games we've enjoyed, from our family to yours!
The Tea Dragon Society and Autumn Harvest - These two games are light deck-builders where each player takes on the care of an adorable "tea dragon,” caring for it and vying for sweet memories together. What’s a tea dragon? The answer to that is in the delightful graphic novel series by Katie O’Neill. You don’t need the backstory to enjoy this game though, just an appreciation for cute illustrations and cozy games. The game takes 30-60 minutes to play and supports 2-4 players. The strategy of the game is a little advanced so we found the age rating of 10+ on the box is pretty on the mark. Younger players can still enjoy playing but struggle to win against adult players. The games also come with a cute learn-to-play comic alternative to the instructions. Both games are essentially the same and can be played together (which bumps the upper player count to 5) but Autumn Harvest adds some token pieces and slightly modified gameplay. For me, if you are only getting one, I would go for that version. My 10-yo and I have enjoyed this game multiple times during special visits to our favorite local tea shop.
Hanabi - This game is now nearly 15 years old and was one of the early leaders in the rise of cooperative games. Still, it’s relatively unknown to many families. In Hanabi, you’re working together to launch fireworks. To do so you have to play your cards in order on shared stacks. The trick is everyone is holding their cards in their hand so that the fronts face everyone ELSE- you can only see the backs of your own cards so you have no idea what cards you hold. You take turns giving very limited information to another player (like “you have 1 red card” or “you have one 5”) You can also choose to play or discard one of you cards- hopefully you’ve figured out what that card is from the clues given by your fellow players! If you can play all 5 numbers in order for all 5 colors as a team, then you have successfully pulled off the fireworks show! This game is all about puzzling out your own mystery hand of cards by paying careful attention to the cards other players are holding and the clues they each choose to give others. Hanabi plays 2-5 players, ages 8+.
